While this may not be the most exceptional black sand beach spot, it is conveniently accessible by car and offers free public entry.
Out of all the spots on the big island, I found myself drawn to this particular beach. On Saturday morning, I headed to the farmer's market on the lava and was pleasantly surprised by the variety of delicious food and the friendly locals. The people here are incredibly resilient, and that's something that I really appreciated during my trip. It's refreshing to be surrounded by genuine folks who are just living their lives.
It's quite a trek from the designated drop-off point to reach the ocean, but once you get there, you'll find a beautiful beach with free public access.
We visited the beach in May 2022 and were able to park alongside the road before walking to the ocean, which took us roughly 10-15 minutes. Unfortunately, the road leading to the water has been blocked to the public due to safety concerns following the last eruption. It's been about 20 years since you could drive down to the beach, swim, see sea turtles, and purchase souvenirs. Nowadays, the beach is mainly covered in Pahoehoe (smooth lava) and cliffs, so it's not advisable to try and go down to the water as it would be dangerous. Nonetheless, the locals were hospitable, and we enjoyed their homemade kombucha and other treats!
If you're a fan of wild and crazy ocean views, you should definitely check out this beach. It's free to the public, so you can enjoy the beautiful scenery without breaking the bank.
