The scenery was beautiful. We visited in early February, so the weather wasn't ideal and the ocean was too chilly for swimming.
Old photos of this beach show how beautiful and natural it once was. Unfortunately, a resort and car park have been built on what used to be the beach, leaving almost nothing left. You can still see on Google Maps how large the beach used to be, but they have covered it with asphalt. It's a real shame and it looks like it won't be around for much longer. It's probably best to avoid it.
We had planned to spend a few days on Cat Ba to take in the stunning beaches we had seen on Google and in our Lonely Planet guide. Unfortunately, when we arrived, we were greatly disappointed to find the beaches had been taken over by the large hotels. The beaches are now privately owned by the hotels, so if you're looking for a tranquil spot, this isn't the place for you.
This beach is great for a romantic getaway!
Cat Ba beach is especially great during the off-season. As the sun sets, the beach starts to get crowded with locals, but during the day it's perfect. I'd strongly advise against eating at the restaurant there, as it's the worst and most overpriced place. I have a separate review for the resort, but suffice it to say, bring your own food and drinks. Most people I saw would just take a quick bike ride into town for lunch and then come back. All in all, it's a great beach.
