This beach is a fantastic spot to appreciate nature, particularly the diverse bird species it offers.
It was a gorgeous location! We initially planned to camp on the beach near the lighthouse, but to ensure our safety, we opted to request permission to stay within the designated campsite. We were granted permission and had the opportunity to fully enjoy all the amenities and recreational activities offered. The camping staff were extremely welcoming and helpful. I highly recommend it.
Situated on the northern coast of Matanzas province, approximately 116 kilometers northeast of the Cuban capital and just 15 kilometers away from Varadero beach, you'll find the impressive Maya lighthouse. This towering structure serves as a vigilant guardian, overlooking an area that is designated as a Fauna Refuge due to its abundant and diverse range of species, many of which are unique to Cuba and the surrounding region. Every nine seconds, the lighthouse emits a flash, providing navigators with precise geographical coordinates to help them navigate safely, avoiding any potential hazards such as reefs and coral banks. This becomes especially crucial in this area, as during low tide, the shoreline extends hundreds of meters into the horizon. Positioned along the northern route of the former road leading to Playa Azul, the Maya lighthouse now connects to a modern road with four lanes, leading to the same destination. It proudly stands facing the Lagoon, which serves as its namesake.
The beach's facilities are in extremely bad shape, and even during the summer, there are hardly any food options available. However, the natural surroundings are absolutely stunning, with a breathtaking landscape. It's a suitable spot for diving, as long as you bring your own equipment.
I've visited many places, but this beach definitely stands out as one of the best.
