The beach isn't anything special, but it's close enough if you don't feel like travelling too far. It's a decent spot for a lazy day by the shore.
Visiting Colorades was a great way to relax during our stay at the Sandos Papagayo hotel nearby. The late afternoon and early evening swims were especially enjoyable. Snorkeling can also be done further up the eastern arm of the bay, but one must be careful of the swell and rocks. Although Mujeres and Papagayo beaches are more picturesque, Colorades is still a lovely beach with great swimming opportunities.
This place is nothing like what is shown on the maps. High tide covers the rocky ledges, and the volcanic stones are a hazard, as evidenced by the many memorials at the cliff where people have tragically slipped and fallen.
Playa de las Coloradas is made up mostly of rocks and stones, with very little sand. Parking is close by and it's quite sheltered, but it may not be the best choice for families with young children. There are a few cafes and shops nearby, and the promenade starts here and goes all the way to the lighthouse, about 10 km away. One resident has stayed put, even with the hotels being built.
That place has its charm, but the rocks and pebbles can be a bit of a nuisance. There's an undeniable fishy odor in certain spots, but overall it's not a bad spot to visit.
