Amazing safe beach for kiddos to enjoy. Shady spots to sit and warm ocean temp. Always a lovely view of Rangitoto and North Head. Better than Narrow Neck for the younger ones. Nice shops for snacks within a 2 min drive. Lots of free street parking.
Lovely beach and reserve. Beautiful wildlife, pretty quiet at low season. At the end of the beach you have some cool hikes which are beautiful on sunny days.
Quiet or wild, high tide or low, Cheltenham is a lovely beach. With a low tide that exposes hundreds of metres of sand, this beach is the first of many beautiful beaches spanning the North Shore's east coast as you head out of the Waitemata Harbour past neighbouring North Head. A favourite spot for swimmers utilizing the raft for diving, children learning to sail, dozens of para surfers skimming the shallow bay mirrored by dog walkers and even navy squads training.
At low tide you can go at least a couple hundred meters into the sea and the water would only reach mid calf. We went on a weekday arvo and it was pretty quiet. Public toilets and changing rooms available at Balmain Reserve (near mid way of the stretch of the beach). Outdoor shower at Matai Road beach entrance.
This tends to be a "local" beach. It is a great setting but the people who live around here regard it as their own private property and tend to be unfriendly to people from outside the area. It is worth a visit if you are in the area but don't make a special trip to visit this beach if it is a long journey.
