Glyfada beach, one of the best beach resorts on the island is called «Queen of the beaches» or «Golden coast of Corfu». Though the village itself is rather small, tourists who have an eye for beach vacation desire to visit this place.
How is it possible to reach the beach?
Located on the west coast, Glyfada represents a wide mile-long sand strip, over which mountains hang overgrown with lush vegetation. There is only a serpentine road leading to Corfu, which is 9 miles away.
Those who'd like to spend time on a sunny golden beach, will have to fly by plane to the island’s capital Kerkyra. Then it will be necessary to reach Glyfada by a regular bus that runs every hour, and it will take about 40 minutes. Another variant is a transfer from the airport, chosen at the time of booking the hotel, or a taxi. For comparison: bus ticket costs 2€, taxi – 2-5 € (as you bargain), transfer – from 10€.
Weather
After arriving at coastal Glyfada Corfu, you understand that beach recreation depends on the season. If in other resort towns and villages you can do something interesting besides beaches, then this place receives tourists only during the season and becomes deserted.
Only at the end of May, the resort is set in order: the beach is cleaned, the cottages and wooden benches are quickly painted, the lawns are trimmed. The resort revives and is ready for warm summer. Tourists flood it in June. They hasten to enjoy three-four warm months when the sea is rather pleasant for swimming. The temperature of the air and sea from July till the end of September differs by only several grades. The hottest months are July and August, the heat reaches +33°C, and tourists rush to hide in lush tropical greenery. Such liveliness lasts till the end of September when the last tourists arrive who strive to get their piece of summer. With their departure, the resort dies out again until the next season.
The beach
A somewhat desolate beach that has been awarded the «Blue Flag» of the UN is rather popular among people. At high season it’s hardly possible to find a free place. Anyway, from the middle of September, only the central part is crowded on weekends when the locals decide to visit the beach. The northern part is always crowded, if you want privacy, then you should go to the southern edge of the beach.
Golden sand, crystally pure water, smooth entrance, and prolonged shallow water make it ideal for recreation with children. Also, the youth likes it because of the water entertainment and parties on the beach. Apart from frequent activities for resorts such as floating on cutter, aquabike, catamaran, paragliding, and water skiing, it’s possible to «ride the waves» in favorable weather. When the wind rises, large waves appear in the sea and surfers enjoy this time.
The beach is public, it’s equipped with cabanas, shower stalls, and sunshades. There are private beaches with bars, playgrounds, and attractions in front of hotels. The cost of entry to them for non-hotel guests varies between 2-12€.
Infrastructure
There are only 4 hotels on the beach itself from the 20 variants offered by the touristic websites, others are situated in 0,5-3 miles. Such a distance isn’t significant in terms of the island of Corfu sizes, but you may agree that it’s pleasant to admire the sea from the window, fall asleep and wake up to the caressing whisper of the waves.
A room for two people in a three-star hotel costs from 60 to 100€, more modest accommodation – 45€.
Except for hotels, it’s possible to rent rooms in the taverns of the resort. They represent two-in-one, sometimes even three-in-one: a restaurant, inn, and a shop. There are not many shops: only a grocery store, several gift stands, and a small supermarket but prices are 1,5-2 times higher than in the capital.
Entertainments
Staying here tourists are deprived of the noise of clubs and discos, evening promenades, and visiting museums. Instead, the resort offers beautiful sunsets and sunrises, picturesque bays, and tropical greenery.
Curious children will like interesting views of flora and fauna: looking like a butterfly flower, lots of small fish near the coast, crabs that have chosen stones in the south of the beach.
Adults will be attracted by the horse club, located not far from the beach. It offers to ride both experienced jockeys and beginners. Golf fans will be able to indulge in their favorite game on the same field.
The Monastery of the Mother of God is the sight that’s worth noting. It may be reached through the nudist beach located behind the northern mountain. For other attractions, it’s necessary to go to the nearest cities and towns.
Glyfada does not claim to be starry, elite, or chic. The resort offers only a relaxing beach vacation, but no other seaside may be compared with it.
Glyfada Beach is located in Attica
within Alimos, which makes it
not only easily accessible, but even popular among tourists.
However, during the high season it is quite uncrowded, which allows you to spend a comfortable time on the
coast.
The beach stretches on the
sunny coast, within the boundaries of the settlement, it is not difficult to get to it.
If your stay is located not far from the beach, you can reach it by walking.
