Kuchcavei is a quaint fishing village situated on the northern coast of Trincomalee, and it is known locally as Samudragiri Pichchamal Viharaya in Sinhala. One of the most captivating features of this place is the intricate carving of 16 stupas on the face of a rock, each measuring 4x4 in size.
There is a stunning beach where you can freely enjoy a truly beautiful experience.
This beach is absolutely stunning, with its breathtaking panoramic view and unique landscape. It features two cliffs, one of which is home to a Stupa, while the other cliff boasts a newly planted bodhi tree and a lookout point maintained by the Sri Lanka Navy. These types of temples, known as 'Muhudu Vihara' or 'Samudragiri Vihara', are typically built on elevated ground near the sea. Additionally, this temple holds great archaeological significance, as you can spot ruins from various time periods. However, what truly captivated me was the natural beauty of the surrounding area. Located between the Kuchchaveli police station and Naval camp, this temple is situated in the quaint fishing village of Kuchchaveli. To reach the Pichchamal Viharaya, simply follow the road near the Kuchchaveli filling station.
If you happen to be in the Trincomalee/Nilaveli area, this beach is definitely worth a visit. It's a hidden gem that shouldn't be missed. You can find the temple right beside the Kucchaveli Police station. There's a new stupa that is currently being constructed, as well as an archaeological stupa right next to it. By climbing up the stairs for about 5 minutes, you'll be rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view of the ocean and the surrounding area. At the top, you'll also find a watch hut belonging to the Sri Lanka Navy, which serves as a fantastic viewpoint. The area where Piccha Mal is located was used by King Dutugamunu to offer Ruwanwelisaya, and that's how it got its name, Picchamal.
The beach is incredibly stunning and should be treasured. It is located near the police station in Kuchchaweli and is home to a breathtaking ancient Buddhist temple. Perched atop a mountain, you will find an old Pagoda that adds to the temple's charm. It is a place of significance for Buddhists, although it lacks any facilities for monks. The temple is conveniently situated near the main road to Pulmoddai, making it easily accessible by any type of vehicle. If you plan on visiting, please consider making a donation to support the temple's preservation. It is crucial to safeguard this type of Buddhist temple for the sake of future generations. Additionally, it is important to protect the beach and its surrounding environment.
