I haven't been to a beach this unique in a while. You have to walk down a sand dune to get to the water, which has some pretty strong waves. I had the whole place to myself until around 5 pm when local families started showing up. It was really cool to see the fishermen bringing in their catch of the day. There was also a lifeguard on duty, which was reassuring. I went in July.
Thuan An beach can be found in Thuan An town, Phu Vang district, Thua Thien Hue province, approximately 15km away from the center of Hue city. It's situated at the spot where the Perfume River meets the Tam Giang lagoon and flows into the East Sea, resulting in a stunning combination of the river's gentle hues and the vastness of the sea. The beach spans 12km and is divided into 3 sections: 1st beach, 2nd beach, and Phu Thuan beach. Although it's not as bustling as some other beaches, Thuan An beach is a great option for visitors who prefer a tranquil and serene environment. Aside from swimming, many tourists opt to camp here, watch the sunrise over the sea, and appreciate the untamed and peaceful beauty of the area.
This is a great spot for a summer swim, and the seafood is both tasty and affordable. I'm spending three months here to finish up some work, and I really enjoy everything about this place.
If you happen to be in the charming city of Hue, make sure to take a dip at the free beach that's just a short 15km drive away. This hidden gem is definitely worth a visit, offering a serene and peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city. Don't miss out on the chance to experience this breathtaking beach and all of its natural beauty.
Back in '68, I was stationed at what we called Tan My beach. It was home to a tank farm that supplied fuel to Hue and Phubi. Today, I can't find any remnants of that past. Despite having served three tours in Vietnam, my interest in revisiting the beach is non-existent.
