Puerto Viejo beach is located on the Caribbean Sea (part of South Atlantic Ocean) and it is in the 162th place out of 233 beaches in the Costa Rica region 148.7 km away from its center, the city of San Jose. It is one of the beaches of Cocles settlement, just 2.9 km from its center. The beach is located in an urban area. It is partially covered by trees which give natural shade.

It is a small bay with turquoise water and bright sand, so you don't need special shoes. The sharpness of entering the water is quite normal. This beach is suitable for different categories of people, lonely travellers, relaxation getaway lovers etc. It is partially crowded during the high season.

The beach is nice, but the town and atmosphere are what really stand out! The locals are welcoming and there is a friendly vibe all around. It's great that many people speak English, making it very convenient. This is definitely my top spot in Costa Rica! When it comes to beaches, my top pick is Punta Uva, but I also suggest checking out Manzanillo, Cahuita, Cocles, and Puerto Vargas.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the seaside, where I found the locals relaxing to the sounds of reggae music. The beach may be compact, yet it stretches out quite far. With rocks and coral present, swimming for extended periods is not feasible.
