What an amazing yet emotional experience, standing where the American forces landed to claim the airfield. So many soldiers died here. The Mississippi aircraft carrier and other ships were anchored out in deeper waters, further than the Japanese artillery weapons could shoot, but the Japanese were waiting in pillboxes and caves. Peliliu, is a must see. Lest we forget the honorable men, of both Japanese and American, that fought here. To the last man standing. I was so moved, and inspired, by the tributes brought by a Japanese tour group to the brave colonel and his men. Wow. Don't miss Peliliu.
Thank you Hugo for this awesome post! I'm sure it was a very humbling experience for you. I wish that sometime, in my lifetime, I can go there.
