This beach is an absolute delight! I highly recommend taking a break here if you're traveling between Algarve and Lisbon. The sand is incredibly soft, making it a pleasure to walk on.
The waters were rumored to be warm, but in reality, only a small area to the north near the pipes had a few warm waves. It was an intriguing experience, but the water was still colder than anticipated and not worth bathing in if you prefer warmer temperatures. During my visit on September 16th, 2017, which was still summer-like, the majority of the water was frigid at around 17 degrees Celsius. However, there were some warm underwater waves that were estimated to be around a pleasant 25 degrees Celsius, although it was difficult to discern.
This is an ideal spot to bring your children as there is an abundance of food and a vast stretch of water. On the day I visited, the waves were small, but the water appeared to be warm only when the plant was fully operational. Unfortunately, it was rather cold during my visit. I cannot confirm the air quality due to the plant's proximity and the passing cargo ships, but I did not detect any issues.
The shoreline boasts an industrial charm, as the beach is situated near a coal power plant, which warms the ocean waters. Despite this, the water remains of high quality and is a great spot for surfing during the cooler months. There are ample parking spaces available, as well as surf schools and two quaint restaurants and bars.
The ocean is a sight to behold, with gentle swells that are perfect for those who are just starting out with surfing or are at an intermediate level. The northern section of the beach is where you'll find more sand, as well as a larger crowd and warmer water. The southern part of the beach is a bit more rugged, with fewer sandy areas and more rocks, especially when the tide is high. Unfortunately, the view is marred by the looming presence of large towers from a nearby thermal power plant, which detracts from the overall ambiance of the beach.
