Calm, measured rest and the sound of waves are perhaps the most common associations that arise with the word "beach". This is not surprising, as relaxation is exactly what many beach travelers are looking for. If you associate your vacation primarily with such activity, choose one of the 102 beaches in the region.

To make your choice easier, we have prepared a list of the best beaches for relaxation in South Australia.

Attraction and Infrastructure

As for the main features of the beaches of South Australia, they are as follows:

  • The region's beaches are mainly wide, long and have a high level of cleanliness. The most common surface is sand of bright color.
  • Usually, entry into the water is gentle, which is very good for kids. There are 89 such beaches.
  • An important clarification, 15 beaches in the region have a long intertidal zone, which means that during low tide hours you may have to travel a considerable distance. This is also something to consider if you don't want to suddenly be in the water at high tide.
  • The average distance from the road to beach in South Australia is less than 500 meters. 102 beaches are relatively easy to access.

Wild beaches with no infrastructure dominate the coastline of South Australia however, even here you can find a beach with a standard set of accessories: sun beds, umbrellas, restaurants, showers and toilets.

Latest reviews on South Australia's beaches

Greenly Beach
10 Annabel Schulze

This is an incredible spot for free camping with numerous stunning beaches. Just keep in mind that there are no nearby drinkable water or toilet facilities, so it's advisable to bring your own water. The beaches can be accessed with a regular two-wheel drive car, although the road leading to them is unpaved and quite bumpy. For the best view, make sure to camp along the edges of the cliffs. Fortunately, there is usually plenty of space between campers, so you won't be bothered by neighbors. It's a good idea to bring some firewood when fire restrictions are not in place, as there isn't much burnable wood around. Keep in mind that it can get windy and chilly at night.

Gym Beach
10 Wally

We had a wonderful family trip to a stunning beach that offered great opportunities for camping, fishing, and surfing.

Longbottom Beach
10 Zylo Renzo

This beach is perfect for a short drive, but you'll need a 4wd vehicle. The sand is a bit soft, but you won't need to deflate your tires. You can exit at Southshore Rd.

Cactus Beach
8 Kaiya

This beach is a paradise for surfers. The campgrounds are conveniently located near the surfing beaches and the surrounding environment is well-maintained. The land is privately owned, and campers are required to pay per person to stay at the campsites.

Back Beach
8 Nolan Grey

This beach is great for surfing. The local map mentioned it's also suitable for swimming, but I believe the rocks and strong waves could make it a bit challenging.

Stokes Bay Beach
10 Daniel R. Chen

This beach is one of the best ones out there. The beach area in front of the rocks is great for kids, but be cautious of the rip just beyond it. It's a shame we couldn't spend more time relaxing here.

Please note that lifeguards supervise 9 beaches in the region, but you should rely on more than just them, remember the elementary rules, as lifeguards are not on duty around the clock, even on equipped beaches!

Finding hotels in relative proximity to the beaches is usually fine. Many beaches have enough nearby accommodation, which gives good opportunities to choose the right place to stay.
